1 PhD - Teaching Assistant Position at ULB

The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences conducts teaching and research across the full range of the environmental Earth Sciences, with activities in areas of chemical geodynamics, petrology, mineralogy, isotope geochemistry, applied geochemistry, sedimentology, basin geodynamics, chemical oceanography, water chemistry, glaciology, biogeochemical and earth system modeling.
The Department is currently offering within the research theme ‘Biogeochemical Modeling – Earth System’ (http://www.ulb.ac.be/sciences/dste/index_fichiers/laboratoire.html ):
1 PhD - Teaching Assistant Position
Project: Greenhouse gases and global climate: past, present and future.
This project aims to advance our understanding of the fundamental controls of the biosphere on global greenhouse gas (CO2 and CH4) emissions in marine sedimentary environments and land-ocean transition systems. For each of these ecosystems, the goal is to develop reactive transport models that will ultimately become valuable tools for environmental management purposes. The project is articulated around three outstanding questions in the broad area of environmental and climate research: (I) The sedimentary carbon sink as a global climate regulator, (II) the global dissolution of marine gas hydrates, and (III) the quantitative significance of estuaries for the CO2 dynamics in the global coastal ocean. The candidate will carry out a PhD in the framework of one of these research questions.
Qualifications: We seek highly motivated candidates who are interested in interdisciplinary research combining various fields of (geo)environmental sciences. Candidates must hold a MSc. degree in Sciences and have a solid background in geosciences, modeling and computational sciences. Expertise in microbiology, hydro(geo)chemistry and/or (sub)surface transport processes is beneficial. He/she communicates easily in English, both verbally and orally. Since this is a part-time teaching assistant position, very good communication skills in French are required.
Terms of employment:
The successful candidate will be offered a full–time position of ‘Assistant’. He/she will carry out a PhD. in the framework of the project ‘Greenhouse gases and global climate: past, present and future’. The researcher will also dedicate part of his/her time to support teaching activities (undergraduate courses in introductory earth sciences and graduate courses in earth system modeling and computational geosciences). The researcher will join the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences. He/She will nevertheless work in close collaboration with several partner institutes abroad.
Further details:
Further information is available from: Prof. Pierre Regnier, email: pregnier@ulb.ac.be You may also wish to visit the website of the research group at http://rtmlab.net
How to apply:
Applications, including a motivation for the position, curriculum vitae, copies of university-level academic transcripts and certificates (including course grades, and 2 letters of references, should be sent by e-mail to: Prof. Lei Chou
Chair, Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences
Lei.chou@ulb.ac.be
Review of application starts immediately and applications are accepted until the position is filled.

Assistant, Associate and/or Senior Scientists - Carbon Cycle Geochemistry ay WHOI

The Marine Chemistry & Geochemistry Department invites applications for a tenure-track or tenured position at the level of Assistant, Associate or Senior Scientist in the field of Carbon Cycle Geochemistry. This is a regular full-time position and is eligible for benefits.
We seek a geochemist who applies diverse analytical and/or modeling skills to investigate carbon cycling – past and present - over a broad range of spatial and temporal scales, who explores interactions between marine, terrestrial, atmospheric aspects of the carbon cycle, and who examines their links to regional and global (paleo)climate and to anthropogenic perturbations.

The selected individual(s) would have the opportunity to work closely with WHOI scientists and engineers carrying out research in the fields of chemical, biological, geological and physical oceanography, and participate in shaping an interdisciplinary climate research program at WHOI. Information regarding on-going research at WHOI can be found at www.whoi.edu. The successful applicant(s) are expected to have a strong interest in collaborative research, seek funding to establish a productive research program, and contribute to graduate education within the MIT-WHOI Joint Program in Oceanography/Applied Ocean Science and Engineering.

The candidate should submit a current CV, a short (1-3 page) Research Statement, and the names of four potential references along with her/his on-line application. The level of the appointment will be based on credentials and experience.

Review of applications will begin on December 1, 2009. For information on the Department of Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry, other WHOI departments, centers and facilities, the MIT/WHOI Joint Program, the WHOI Ocean Institutes and the Woods Hole Consortium of research organizations, please visit the following websites:

Education Desired:
Applicants should have a doctoral degree, postdoctoral experience and a publication record in Carbon Cycle Geochemistry, or related fields. Women and minority applicants are particularly encouraged.
WHOI is sensitive to the issues of dual career scientists and will work with applicants to address them.
HOW TO APPLY

If you are an interested applicant, there is a two-step process to apply for this position.
You will not finish the application process until BOTH Steps 1 and 2 are completed:

Step 1:
Applications should include a statement that clearly describes the applicant's research interests (three page maximum), a CV with names and addresses of four references, and up to three relevant publications (if paper, these will not be returned) may be emailed to:

asweck@whoi.edu
Please be sure to reference the announcement number.

Step 2:
