Work Package 13: Regional assessment for the West-Mediterranean

Leader: Catherine Goyet

Objectives
- To create the data sets, measurement systems, and model set-ups as prerequisite for a
quantitative estimate of Mediterranean carbon fluxes and Mediterranean/Atlantic carbon
exchanges.
- To assess the concentration of anthropogenic CO2 in the W. Mediterranean.

Description of work
Data bases (task leader A. Rios):
- Mediterranean CO2 and calcification data will be reviewed and collected as boundary conditions
for budgeting and modelling purposes from institutional and other data sources. These data will
be fed into the central CARBOOCEAN data base (link to WP 19). (partners 5, 20, 22, 24)
Field work (task leader J. Ruiz):
- 4 seasonal cruises sampling the Camarinal section to assess the CO2 exchange between W. Med.
and Atlantic Ocean (link to core theme 2). (partners 5, 2224)
- Regular sampling at the French JGOFS time series station DYFAMED. (partner 22)
?? Sampling for carbon cycle and related parameters in the Rhone delta, in the Gulf of Lions and
off Alger. (partners 22)
- Modelling (task leader C. Goyet):
- Estimate of anthropogenic CO2 in the W. Med. using recent data and back calculation techniques
(link to core theme 2). (partners 22)
- Set-up of a 3D hydrodynamic biogeochemical model (ORCA/PISCES BOGCM). (partner 22)
