Work Package 3: Long term assessment

Leader: Arne Koertzinger

Objectives
- Establish the framework for repeated anthropogenic CO2 (Cant) inventory quantification within
the Atlantic Ocean basin, including its polar extensions and the European marginal seas.
- Create interfaces between CARBOOCEAN activities and related international activities in order
to permit global ocean inventory estimates.

Description of work
Review literature estimates of Cant inventories for other oceans and reservoirs (land, atmosphere)
(all partners).
Update and improve earlier assessments of Atlantic basin and Southern Ocean inventories through
incorporation of results from WPs 8, 9, 12, 13, and 17 by:
(a) Collection, assembly and interpretation of data from the Atlantic interior (WP 8 and 9),
(b) Measurements and modelling of North Sea and Mediterranean contributions to Atlantic inventories
(WPs 13, 14),
(c) Large-scale modelling (WPs 1, 9, 10, 18).
Contribute to a global ocean inventory analysis by linking and harmonizing CARBOOCEAN activities
with the International Ocean Carbon Coordination Project (IOCCP) inventory quantification in
other ocean basins.
Compare ocean inventory estimates with fossil-fuel emissions and terrestrial fluxes
(CarboEurope IP, Global Carbon Project - GCP) (all partners).
Consistency check with prognostic assessment from modelling and the annual assessments
(WPs 1, 2) (all partners).
