Work Package 1: Prediction towards Sustainable Development

Leader: Helge Drange

Objectives
- Compilation of the modelling framework for improved carbon source/sink predictions of (a) the
global ocean, (b) the Atlantic basin including its polar extensions and exchanges with European
Seas , (c) the Southern Ocean.
- Creation of the interfaces between the existing data base of ocean carbon cycle observations and
large-scale climate models.
- Creation of interfaces for implementation of new feedbacks into models.
- Identification of critical disagreements between simulations and observations for the present
ocean together with WPs 2 and 3.
- Summary on existing knowledge about the performance of coupled carbon cycle climate models
including their uncertainties.

Description of work
- Performance information about existing carbon cycle climate models is compiled from the
literature and PIs (all partners).
- Standardised observational data sets, model output data sets, and cost functions for quality
assessment are designed as a baseline for measuring further improvements (WPs 2, 3, 11, 17,
19, all partners).
Integrations of state-of-the-art the coupled carbon cycle models for present day conditions
(partners 1, 6, 11, 28, 33, 34) and compared with the data base of existing ocean carbon cycle
observations (partners 1, 3, 4, 5, 7,8, 9, 16, 18, 23, 25, 28, 32, 34, 36, 37, 39) (WPs 12, 17, 19).
- Plugs for new model codes representing new feedbacks are provided (partners 1, 3, 4, 6, 11, 12,
17, 28, 32, 33, 34, 35) (WPs 15, 16, 17).
